5 Tips For Helping Your Child Adjust To Braces

October 27, 2019 by Jarred

When your child finds out that they need braces, it may come as a surprise to both of you. Whether it’s due to a crooked smile, or an overbite, braces are a very common orthodontic treatment.

The adjustment period can be challenging, however. The actual application of braces can be frightening for younger children, and the aesthetic of braces may be unnerving to older children.

Here are some of the things you should know that can help your child adjust to their new braces easier.

They May Experience Discomfort The First Few Weeks

The adjustment period can be challenging, and kids may feel like the strangeness of braces will never wear off.

As they adjust to the feeling of foreign objects stuck to their teeth, it can be a strange sensation at first, particularly if they wear a nightguard. They’ll notice pressure as well as potential tenderness immediately following the application.

They may find talking more challenging, and might even develop a lisp! Rest assured that after the initial adjustment period, they’ll hardly notice that they have braces.

Remind Them That All Kinds Of People Have Braces

There are millions of people who get braces in the United States. They aren’t alone with their new dental gear! In fact, it may help to connect with other kids with braces so that they know what they’re experiencing isn’t unique.

Kids often accept new situations with more of an open mind if they know that they’re not the only one!

It’s Important To Clean After Eating

It’s true that food will naturally wedge itself in their braces. It’s essential to take special care of them by cleaning them after every meal.

You may want to encourage your child to always carry around an SOS braces kit equipped with extra floss, toothpaste, and a toothbrush.

They May Make Their Face Look Different

When they first look in the mirror, they may be shocked by the seemingly new person looking back at them. Their lips may be pushed out further, and they may feel like a stranger is smiling back at hem.

You can reduce this initial shock by preparing them for the physical changes. Makes sure to reiterate that the braces are only temporary!

The Results Will Be Worth It

Ultimately, despite the challenges, their braces will be worth it! Their teeth will change for the better. The day that their braces come off will be a rewarding moment!

The most important thing to assure your child about is that braces are temporary. They won’t have them in their teeth forever, and they’re certainly not the only people in the world with them!

There’s nothing like the result of a perfect smile that makes you smile!
