An Art Lover’s Guide to Must-See Museums in Japan

September 21, 2018 by Jarred

Japan is not only a haven for travelers who love fashion, food, and lifestyle. It is a country deeply rooted in tradition but at the same time celebrates individuality and artistic expression. If you are an art lover, Japan is home to exciting art installations and world-class museums.

The beauty of art is how it connects people from different walks of life. You don’t need to have technical knowledge; you just have to appreciate how the artist chose to express his work through a chosen medium. Here is a list of the best art museums in Japan you should consider on your next visit.

Mori Art Museum

This ultra-modern museum is considered the highest in the world. Located on the 54th floor of a building in Tokyo, the museum houses diverse collections of contemporary art from around the globe. The museum also supports young talent by organizing MAM projects.

The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo

This museum opened its doors in 1952 with a collection that has grown continually over the years. To house the large collections the museum underwent several renovations, the latest of which happened in 1999. The museum is best known for its collection of artwork from the Meiji Period. In addition to this, there is an impressive display of contemporary art from Japanese and international artists. Further expansion to the museum resulted in the inclusion of a Crafts Gallery and the National Film Centre.

Ichiku Kubota Art Museum

This picturesque museum is located along the northern coast of Lake Kawaguchiko. The museum is devoted to the artwork of famed Japanese textile artist Ichiku Kubota. His collection of intricately dyed Kimonos is truly a sight to behold. While the museum houses a permanent display of the Kubota Collection, an exhibit consisting of some of his work has travelled around the world through the efforts of Patokh Chodiev’s Kubota Collection which has the aim of bringing Japanese art to a worldwide audience.

National Museum of Western Art

International cities around the world like Paris, New York, and London all house impressive collections of artwork from renowned western artists. Tokyo is no different, and you can find these iconic masterpieces in the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. Here you will find impressionist paintings and sculptures from artists like Rodin. The museum focuses on artwork from the Renaissance period until the early years of the 20th century. These exhibits give locals and tourists equal opportunity to behold the finest artwork from renowned artists throughout history.

Benesse Art Site in Naoshima

The islands in the Seto Inland Sea have become a hub for art in recent years through the efforts of Benesse Holdings and the Fukutake Foundation. They worked with artists and architects to create venues providing visitors with unique art experiences such as the Benesse Art Site in Naoshima, and the Chichue Art Museum. On top of this, visitors can stay at the Benesse House Hotel to further experience the art exhibits around the surrounding islands, while also appreciating the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage in the area.
