Chord & Craft: 7 Habits of Highly Creative Musicians

Creativity flows through the veins of remarkable musicians like electricity through circuits—sometimes in unexpected surges, other times in steady currents. Whether you’re an amateur practicing scales at home or a professional warming up at a vintage analogue recording studio, the same question arises: what separates innovative musicians from those who merely play notes?

The seven habits below are a good place to start unraveling that mystery.

1. They Embrace Deliberate Imperfection

Creative musicians understand the difference between technical flaws and character-giving imperfections. They recognize when a slightly out-of-tune note creates tension that resolves beautifully, or when a vocal crack conveys emotion that pristine delivery cannot. This doesn’t mean tolerating sloppy performance—rather, it’s discerning which “mistakes” actually serve the music.

The worship of technical perfection often yields sterile recordings. Musicians who push boundaries know when to preserve happy accidents and when human variation adds warmth machines cannot replicate. They make these choices consciously, not out of laziness or inability to perform better.

2. They Practice Sideways Learning

While most musicians study directly within their field, the truly innovative ones absorb influences from unexpected sources. A jazz pianist studies West African drumming. A rock guitarist explores Carnatic vocal techniques. A hip-hop producer deconstructs classical orchestration.

These cross-pollinations create distinctive voices. When different traditions collide in one musician’s mind, novel combinations emerge that wouldn’t arise through conventional study alone. The most creative players see musical boundaries as arbitrary constructs rather than meaningful divisions.

3. They Structure Their Experimentation

Contrary to romantic notions of pure inspiration, creative musicians approach experimentation methodically. They isolate variables and test them systematically: What happens when this familiar progression moves to an unexpected key? How does this melody sound against three different harmonic backgrounds? What happens when traditional instruments are played non-traditionally?

This scientific approach to creativity yields more usable results than random noodling. By changing specific elements while maintaining others, they discover which alterations produce meaningful innovation versus mere novelty.

4. They Schedule Unstructured Time

Paradoxically, alongside structured experimentation, innovative musicians protect blocks of completely unstructured creative time. These sessions have no goals, no deadlines, no expected outcomes—just pure exploration.

During these periods, they follow curiosity without judgment. Technical exercises transform into composition ideas. Production experiments spark arrangement innovations. Without pressure to produce finished work, the mind connects dots it might otherwise miss. Many breakthrough techniques emerge not during focused work but during these sanctioned play sessions.

5. They Collect Sound Obsessively

Creative musicians develop magpie tendencies toward sound itself. They record snippets of conversation that contain interesting rhythms. They sample the metallic ping of specific elevator doors. They document the resonant frequency of wine glasses filled to different levels.

These sound collections become personal libraries of inspiration. When composition stalls, browsing these archives often triggers new directions. The habit of sonic observation also trains the ear to detect subtleties most people miss, expanding the palette of available musical colors.

6. They Embrace Technical Constraints

Rather than viewing limitations as obstacles, innovative musicians often impose deliberate constraints to spark creativity. They might record an entire track using only three notes, restrict themselves to instruments they don’t play well, or commit to using only sounds recorded within a five-mile radius of home.

These self-imposed challenges prevent reliance on habits and force new approaches. When comfortable patterns aren’t available, the brain must forge new neural pathways. Constraints paradoxically expand creative options by eliminating the paralysis that unlimited choices can create.

7. They Make Renewal Non-Negotiable

Sustained creativity requires renewal practices. The most innovative musicians step away from music entirely on a regular schedule. They hike mountains, study architecture, practice martial arts, or immerse themselves in visual arts—activities that engage different parts of the brain and spirit.

This deliberate distance creates space for subconscious processing and prevents creative burnout. When they return to their instruments, fresh perspectives emerge naturally. Music-making becomes sustainable rather than depleting, allowing creativity to flow throughout decades-long careers.

The difference between musicians who create formulaic work and those who consistently innovate rarely comes down to talent alone. It’s these seven habits, practiced with discipline and joy, that transform good players into pioneers who expand what music can be and how it touches human hearts.
