Dental Care And Skin Care: Why The Two Are Related

September 17, 2020 by Jarred

You might not be aware that skin care and dental care are very much connected, as good oral hygiene ensures that no bacteria enter the bloodstream.

As many doctors and dentists will confirm, oral hygiene is directly connected to general skin care. The mouth is considered to be the gateway to the body, as all nourishment enters the body via the mouth. You might have the perfect balanced diet and regular daily exercise, but if your oral hygiene is poor, then you can suffer with skin problems.

What Makes For Best Oral Hygiene Practices?

Most dentists would agree that brushing and flossing after every meal and before and after sleep are essential for good oral hygiene, as this ensures that minute food particles are removed quickly after eating. If trapped food stays in your mouth, it quickly becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and this can lead to a gum infection and that could threaten your overall health. Flossing is necessary to make sure that stubborn food particles between the teeth are removed, and this should be carried out after every brushing session.

Replace Amalgam Fillings

If you have metal fillings, these could be causing toxins to enter your bloodstream, indeed, many patients have had their amalgam fillings replaced with a composite material, which is non-toxic. Not all dentists are qualified to safely remove amalgam fillings, which do contain minute traces of mercury, known to be toxic to human beings.

Using Antiseptic Mouthwash

This will prevent any form of bacteria from lingering inside the mouth, and you can carry a small bottle with you when you are out and about. Using mouthwash after drinking coffee or red wine helps remove the sugar that feeds bacteria in the mouth. If you swill correctly, this cause pressure between the teeth and this will effectively remove minute particles of food that brushing often leaves behind.

Twice Yearly Dental Examinations

Ideally, you should see your dentist every 6 months for a check-up, which would reveal any oral issues before too much damage is caused. Some people make the mistake of not going to see the dentist if they do not experience any oral issues, and having regular check-ups is a great way to prevent serious damage to your teeth and gums. This preventative approach is much preferred to only seeing your dentist when you are in pain, as this is likely to result in damage of some sort.

Cosmetic Dentistry

If you would like a straighter or whiter smile, talk to a cosmetic dentist, who can carry out an initial examination and make treatment recommendations. Finding clinics that practice cosmetic dentistry in Auckland or anywhere else in the world is easy. A quick Google search should lead you to a reputable clinic near your area that offers a wide range of cosmetic dental treatments, such as:

  • Dental Implants
  • Teeth Whitening Treatments
  • Invisalign and wire braces
  • Porcelain Veneer Treatment
  • Crowns & Bridges

If you have a balanced diet and see your dentist every few months for a check-up, plus you have a good diet, your overall health should be good, and your skin should be clear.
